The Top Design Trend for 2008
October 15, 2008
Did you know that green (sustainable) design tops the charts as the number one trend right now in home design? And that it’s a major factor in driving color trends? Do you know why? I believe it’s not only because going green is healthier, more efficient, and better quality, but also because the second time around, we are finding ways to make it beautiful. Let’s face it, ugly doesn’t sell.
I like to equate being green in our homes to keeping our bodies healthy. If we take care of our body by keeping it hydrated, reducing stress, providing the right fuel and exercise, our body will last longer, be better quality and be more efficient. And that’s good news since we only get one body. The same holds true for our homes and planet. Maybe that’s why we should take care of them too.
So where do we start? With the constant barrage of news about how to be green, I know it’s confusing and sometimes over whelming. I’ve felt the same way. That’s why I started researching and here’s what I’ve found. To measure if a product is green or sustainable, try adding together three things: the resource to mine a product, the resource or energy to ship a product, plus the renewability of a product. By using this equation, you will find that you better evaluate whether products are a good solution for your home or life. From the big picture to the small details, being green can benefit not only our environment, but also our health and pocketbook.
